Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have terminated the contract of out-of-favour forward Nicklas Bendtner.

Bendtner, 28, had been released from training duties at the club earlier this year, while director of sport Klaus Allofs had declared the “experiment” of signing the Dane a “failure”.

The former Arsenal man had signed a three-year contract until June 2017 but failed to make a lasting impression, while he also hit the headlines in March for turning up 45 minutes late for training. He was fined 2,250 euros – 50 for every minute of his arrears.

Talks over his contract situation began in late March, and on Monday Allofs said in a club statement: “Both Nicklas and ourselves had high hopes of his engagement at VfL Wolfsburg.

“But after two years, we have had to ascertain that the expectations were neither fulfilled for him nor for us and a continued co-operation made no sense for either side.

“For that reason, the mutual decision to end our association prematurely is the best solution for all parties. We wish Nicklas all the very best for his future career.”

Bendtner, who has had loan stints with Juventus, Sunderland, and Birmingham, finishes his time at Wolfsburg with 47 appearances and nine goals.
