Newstalk reporter Henry McKean met Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor today and asked her about turning 30 in July, relationships and retirement.

“I don’t plan on hanging up my gloves anytime soon, who knows! I could have 10 kids or be boxing until I’m 40,” Taylor said of her plans for the future, as mum Bridget laughed in the background.

“We will see what happens.”

After losing her first fight in five years earlier this month, Taylor is still focused on qualifying for the Rio Olympics this summer.

“I’ve had losses in my career before, and I’ve always come back stronger from those losses. Thankfully I’ve another chance to qualify next month.”

Taylor’s father Pete is no longer involved in her training but the Bray woman is confident of the team she has around her now.

“My dad just decided to take a break,” she explained. “I always respected him because he was my coach.

“I respect the team around me now, they are doing what’s best for me, I have to do what I’m told.”

Taylor also discussed high-profile UFC star Conor McGregor, saying she was a big admirer of his but didn’t intend following him into the octagon.

“I’m a huge fan of Conor McGregor, an incredible athlete, what he has done for MMA is phenomenal, he has been a great supporter of me,” she said.

“I know MMA isn’t for everyone, it is a combat sport, some people don’t like watching it but it is entertainment for some people.

“I think I will stick to the boxing for the time being,” she said when asked about trying the sport herself.

“I’m good with my hands not good with my feet, if they got me on the ground I would be in trouble.”

McKean also asked Katie Taylor for some boxing tips: ‘Put your hands up and chin down, close your eyes.’
