Jurors in David Mahon’s murder trial have today heard he told gardaí that his stepson had twice threatened to kill him and once pulled a gun on him.

The 45-year-old denies stabbing Dean Fitzpatrick to death his apartment in Northern Cross, near Malahide in Dublin in May 2013.

During a voluntary interview a few hours after his stepson died, David Mahon told Gardaí that Dean pulled a knife on him. He said it wasn’t the first time. He said they often argued.

He described him as an “eejit who was always putting it up to me”.

He said he took it off him but later confronted him with it on the landing outside his apartment.

After demanding to know why he pulled a knife on his father, he said Dean walked into the blade and then ran away.

A post mortem revealed it cut through his main blood vessel, causing him to bleed out.

The Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis said he wasn’t able to confirm whether it was an “accidental run-on or deliberate thrust.”

The accused left the apartment and threw the knife out a car window while his friend drove him around north Dublin.

He described his stepson as a scumbag who stole bikes and sold drugs but said he didn’t deserve this.

The trial will resume in the morning.
