Drivers are being urged to prepare your vehicle if you plan on taking a long journey this bank holiday weekend.

The AA has said it expects to attend to 240 breakdowns – over the course of the three days.

Motorists are being advised to make sure your car has enough fuel, its lights are in good order, and that the engine’s oil and water are topped up.

Director of Consumer Affairs at the AA Conor Faughnan, has said bank holiday weekends can be particularly dangerous for those who aren’t used to long distances: “You really should take a break or share the driving if you can.

“Now in terms of what we find on the roads, we find the roads get bittier on the western seaboard and outside of the cities.

“So that means they are a little bit dangerous and unfortunately every bank holiday weekend, there will be a number of crashes.

“So you have to advice people to slow right down, to take no risks with alcohol or fatigue and just respect the fact that roads are dangerous.”
