New rules for landlords will not help tenants according to the Irish Property Owners Association.

It is now an offence for landlords to evict a tenant on grounds of them selling the property unless they sign a statutory declaration that they’re doing so.

It is one of a range of measures aimed at reforming the Irish rental market.

But Margaret McCormack of The Irish Property Owners Association has said they will not have the desired effect.

“All this is doing is causing more problems for the tenants in the country and more costs for tenants and for landlords.

“This doesn’t help anybody in any shape or form.

“It is just having a detrimental effect on the market and having a detrimental effect on the supply of accommodation.

“This isn’t designed to help everything work, this is designed to frustrate the management of rental property and that is not good for anyone.”
