The National Women’s Council has called on Acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny to deliver on this pre-election pledge and appoint more female Government Ministers.

During the recent General Election, more women than ever won seats.

Eleven of those were Fine Gael TDs, and five were Independents.

Last December, Enda Kenny pledged to appoint equal numbers of women and men to Cabinet if Fine Gael was returned to power.

Louise Glennon from the National Women’s Council said it is time to honour that commitment.

“They quotes a 50/50 balance, we’d be looking for, at the very least, a 60/40 balance, to reflect the increased number of women in politics and then also just to give a critical mass in terms of women’s voices around the Cabinet table,” she said.
