Former Hurler of the Year Tony Kelly says that the Clare players and management are immune to the criticism of their playing style.

Kelly inspired the Banner to the League title after finally getting the better of Waterford in their replayed final yesterday.

Some fans and pundits were critical of the style of play used by both sides in the drawn game, but Kelly says that the players are only interested in results.

“Every team tries to play to their strengths,” he told Newstalk’s ‘Off The Ball’.

“You see the likes of Kilkenny, big, strong, physical men who’re able to win their own ball. I suppose Waterford and Clare have a similar style in what they decide to do is hold possession and work it into a scoring position.

“There was a lot made of the drawn game, that it was dull and was kind of ruining hurling, but to be honest as players and as management in Clare, we don’t really care and I think Waterford would be the same way.

“We’re only there putting our plans in place to win trophies and win games and at the end of the day, we’re not getting up at 6 o’clock in the morning and five or six nights a week to go into Thurles and entertain.

“Our first priority is to win games. If it’s dull and boring, as long as we’re winning as players, I don’t think we’ll mind.”
