We’ve heard of father and son pairings playing on the same team, writes Stephen Barry.

It famously happened in international football when a 17-year-old Eidur Gudjohnsen made his Iceland debut by coming on as a sub for his father, Arnor, who was 34 at the time.

And it happened in the Pro12 last October when Regan King (35) was joined on the field by his son Jacob Cowley (18) for the final 13 minutes of a Scarlets game.

But a father and son on opposing teams?

We hadn’t heard that one before.

That was until word reached us of the historic Fermanagh Reserve Erne Cup Division 2 clash between Coa O’Dwyers and Enniskillen Gaels.

It was there that Michael McGinn (47) lined out for Coa, one of the smallest clubs in the county, while his son, Gavin (22), played for opponents Enniskillen.

The younger McGinn took home the bragging rights in the end, as Enniskillen won 3-18 to 0-4 to stay top of the Division 2 league table.

Coa even mentioned the youthful nature of their opponents in their congratulations.
