It is being reported that a female resident has died at the Áras Attracta care home in Co Mayo.

It is believed the woman, who was living in Bungalow 3 at the facility, was in a kitchen used by residents when she had difficulty swallowing some food just before 10pm last night.

Staff tried to help the woman with specialist suction equipment and the emergency services were alerted to the home in Swinford, Co Mayo.

They tried to revive the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The HSE is liaising with gardaí and the local coroner in their investigation of her death.
