A new housing proposal recommends the State would rent 50% of homes in certain developments to households who qualify for social housing, and the rest to those who are not eligible.

The Workers Party is launching a policy document “Solidarity Housing” today, which highlights current failures in the system, in terms of quality, affordability and security of tenure.

It also suggests changes in the thresholds for rents.

Councillor Éilis Ryan says under the proposals everyone will have access to the same standard of housing.

She said: “It’s more financially viable because you are bringing more and more people into the social housing mix so the State gains greater revenue which it can re-invest into housing.

“The second real advantage is that this builds truly integrated communities. So we feel that the public/private partnerships have different kinds of housing for social housing and for private housing, this creates stigma, it creates division.

“The proposal we have means that everbody is accessing the same standard of housing as a right from the State.”
