Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has indicated that he may decide not lead his party into the next general election.

The Louth and East Meath TD said it would depend on when the ballot would take place.

Mr Adams said that he will stay in charge for the time being, but the length of his tenure depends on a number of matters.

“Well, for as long as the party wants me, for as long as my family allow me, for as long as my health permits me,” he said.

“We’re just out of an election in the North, we have this election, it’s a very consuming, intensive, ongoing business.”
