THE REPORTED return of a group of nudists to Curracloe Beach on Sunday afternoon was met with some scrutiny by Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. Ger Carthy who voiced his concerns over the presence of children and families on the beach at the time.

The Irish Naturists Association, who made headlines back in January when some of their members stripped off to play hurling on Curracloe beach, had scheduled a beach gathering for noon on Sunday according to their Facebook page.

Cllr. Ger Carthy however said that no formal application had been made to host any event at the beach and pointed out that, given the fine weather, the beach would have been particularly busy at the time.

He said: “I think it’s a case of live and let live but if that was to happen on the main street in Wexford, you’d be arrested for indecent exposure.”

He said that the local authority would engage with people in relation to organising events but he did not think it should done in such an impromptu fashion, particularly in an area where families and children were present.

“I certainly don’t think it would be appropriate for their eyes,” he said, adding that it was a matter he would be raising with the council.
