Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald will address the United Nations today to outline what the Government’s done to improve human rights here.

The UN is reviewing the progress on a number of issues – however abortion’s expected to top the agenda.

It is the first significant event Minister Fitzgerald has had to deal with since being chosen as Tánaiste last Friday.

Mark Kelly of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties said that Ireland’s human rights laws will be put under the spotlight today.

“This is a review of the performance that Ireland has put in over the last four-and-a-half years, during the tenure of the previous Government, and it’s significance is that it will be United Nations member states who will be asking questions about the progress that has been made,” he said.

“And after that there will be a set of recommendations for further improvements.”
