Business owners are calling for binding arbitration in order to resolve the ongoing pay dispute involving Luas drivers.

Richard Guiney, CEO of business group Dublin Town, has said that strike action by drivers is having a detrimental effect on businesses in Dublin city.

Yesterday, Luas drivers announced that they would strike for six more days next month, in addition to four days planned for this month.

The Luas operator Transdev said that the work stoppages are designed to cause maximum disruption to Luas customers and said it would be seeking legal advice.

Richard Guiney said that a third party needs to intervene in an effort to resolve the situation.

“I think at this stage, you know, we’ve had 10 days of strikes, there are further strikes planned, and we would feel at this stage that perhaps we are looking at the situation where we need binding arbitration,” he said.

“It certainly doesn’t look as if the parties have a common ground or that is any movement, so perhaps it is at the point where someone has to intervene and call for binding arbitration.”
