Former Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said Enda Kenny made “a mistake” by telling the Dáil that he [Shatter] accepted responsibility for alleged wrongdoing.

Mr Shatter says that he never accepted any wrongdoing in the first place – a position vindicated by the O’Higgins Commission.

Mr Shatter has written to the Taoiseach asking him to correct the Dáil record, and also to withdraw the older Guerin Report which made negative findings against him.

A spokesman for Enda Kenny said the letter had been received and would reply in due course.

The O’Higgins report cleared Shatter of any wrongdoing in his handling of the claims, despite the earlier criticism of the Guerin Report.

“I now think it’s important that the record set right, because I occupy a space now in which we have the Guerin Report, in which I was condemned without ever being interviewed, or any questions put to me or even talked with by Mr Guerin, and we have the O’Higgins Commission report.

“The conclusions of the O’Higgins Commission report and the Guerin Report are totally and completely incompatible.”
