By every metric, Will Wilcox’s hole-in-one at the iconic 17th hole at Sawgrass is remarkable, writes Stephen Barry.
The island green hadn’t given up a competitive hole-in-one for 14 years, with 6,300 attempts clocked up in the interim.
According to one golf writer, there has been only seven aces in the past 33 years.
Updating the number from yesterday: Since 1983, there have now been 14,543 tee shots at the 17th hole. Only SEVEN have gone in for an ace.

So that makes Wilcox’s achievement a 0.0005 chance.
And if that’s not impressive enough, he did it with an “interesting squirm” of a shot using the rarely-sighted yellow golf ball.
That’s a collector’s item, right there.
