Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs, Dara Calleary has said the approach taken by management towards long serving Tesco workers is deeply unjust and unfair.

The company is proposing changes to the contracts of long serving workers that will see a reduction in their pay.

A nationwide strike due to go ahead tomorrow has been called off – to allow talks to happen later this week.

Deputy Calleary has written to the CEO of Tesco Ireland outlining his concerns: “First thing is that they should be treated fairly and they should be treated with respect.

“Many of the workers involved have given many decades in some cases thirty years of service to Tesco and previously to Quinnsworth, which Tesco bought in Ireland.

“The success of the business is based on the efforts of these workers and on their interaction with customers so Tesco owe these workers respect and fairness and frankly we don’t feel they have given them that to date.”
