The Ennis to Limerick railway line is expected to fully re-open this evening.

It has been closed since December after around three kilometres of track at Ballycar Lough became flooded after winter storms.

The 4:30pm service from Limerick to Ennis is due to run through there again this evening.

Barry Kenny is from Irish Rail; “It centred around an area called Ballycar which is near Newmarket-on-Fergus.

“This has an extremely low drainage environment so while everyone remembers the extreme weather we had in December and January, the flood levels in this area only peaked in early March because the flows into the area are far greater than the flows out.

“It rose to 1.4 metres above the track.”
