Changes to the way the Dáil operates are being debated by TDs today.

The final report of the reform committee includes an increase in the number of committees, including a new budget oversight group.

Green party leader Eamon Ryan, is among those who’ve been working on the Dáil reform proposals.

He says there are significant changes to how the opposition can present legislation: “The opposition will now get about 40% of Dáil time,

In the past private members business was something you had late at night where you couldn’t really put through any legislation.

“The provision has now been made to give four hours every week for opposition to present legislation and I think that is a significant change.”
