Secondary school teachers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of withdrawing from working additional hours, known as “Croke Park hours”.

ASTI members voted against the hours by 68% to 31% in a ballot that had a 76% turnout.

Teachers say the hours are “unproductive” and “negatively impact” on students’ education because they divert teachers’ time away from their core duties.

The hours were introduced under the Haddington Road Agreement.

The Standing Committee of the ASTI will meet tomorrow to consider the outcome of the ballot.
