New proposals could see a 30km-an-hour speed limit expanded across Dublin.
The suggestion by Dublin City Council follows an 18-month review of traffic conditions and accident data.
The lower limit would come into force at the end of the year. City centre streets excluded from the plan include Pearse Street, College Street, College Green, Nassau Street and Essex Quay.
A 80kph limit would still apply to the sections of the Chapelizod bypass, Dublin Port Tunnel and Santry bypass.
A 60kph would also be allowed on some other main routes, including parts of the Long Mile Road, Malahide Road and Griffith Avenue.
The limits in Dublin city centre were lowered from 50 km-per-hour to 30 kms in 2006, with an extension of the area covered in 2011.
Chairperson of the Council’s transport committee CiarĂ¡n Cuffe wants the 30k limit to be extended in the city centre and suburbs.
He said it would focus on residential areas and around schools, and that the plan is to roll it out between the canals by spring of next year.
After that, it would move into areas including Phibsboro, Raheny, Glasnevin, Sandymount and Drimnagh.
