A total of 412 same-sex couples have married in Ireland since the Marriage Equality referendum was passed last year.

New figures from the Department of Social Protection show most gay couples were married in Dublin, which hosted more than 200 weddings.

There were 43 same-sex marriages in Cork, and 25 in Limerick. Wicklow had 17 same-sex marriages, followed by Galway, Kildare, Donegal and Wexford.

Carlow, Leitrim and Monaghan all had one marriage registered. Clare is the only county not to register a same-sex marriage in the 12 months since the referendum.

Demand for marriage celebrants has also doubled, with 400 weddings expected this year for the bespoke-weddings organisation Marry Me Ireland, a fifth of whose client list will be gay couples.

The number of celebrants has doubled to keep up with demand. Marry Me Ireland currently has 42 celebrants on their books.

A majority 62% of voters vote for same-sex marriage in May last year, making Ireland the first country in the world to make it law by popular vote.
