Eight Gardaí are to be sent to France for Euro 2016.

The officers will be deployed to Lille and Bordeaux, where Ireland will play two of their group games in the tournaments.

The officers will assist their French counterparts in helping to manage the crowds of Irish fans, and help with any consular problems.

A similar scheme operated was operated in Poland when Ireland qualified for Euro 2012.
