Four-hour Luas stoppages by Luas drivers, scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week, have been cancelled.

Siptu’s Owen Reidy confirmed this morning that there will be no Luas stoppages this week as drivers consider new pay proposals from the Labour Court.

Speaking to RTÉ Radio, he said: “Normal practice would be, not just for our union, but for any union, when you have pending stoppages literally days ahead, and when you’re issued with proposals like this, that those actions would be cancelled or suspended to allow proper deliberation and consultation, and that same practice will apply here.

“There’s nothing different or unusual about that.”

The strikes planned for next week have not been cancelled at this time, however.

“There’s no reason to do that at this moment in time, because it depends on how people will vote on these proposals,” he said.

The union’s committee is meeting this morning to organise a ballot on yesterday’s proposals for ending the dispute.

The court’s recommendations include wage increases of up to 18.3% and the reversal of cuts to drivers’ pay and benefits.

Mr Reidy also said that the Labour Court also wants an assessment of the drivers’ pay compared to European standards.

“There should also be a joint review conducted on pay and conditions of light rail operators across Europe to see if our members are still out of line, because our members do believe that our members have been paid up to now.”
