WITH CONSTRUCTION work continuing on the old Sheehan’s premises on Rafter Street, whispers have continued among the Enniscorthy public about a new store for the town centre location.
Scaffolding was first erected on the building two weeks ago and work has continued ever since. While some rumours have circulated suggesting a Penneys, a pound shop and even a new restaurant would occupy the landmark building, the owners of the premises have confirmed that there are currently no plans for a new business to move in.
Speaking on Friday, Ms Yasming Weng, who is listed on the Planning Application for the building and is currently looking after the property on behalf of the owners who are living in China, said she was unaware of any new plans for the building.
“Basically the building is getting fixed up at the moment,” she said. “The old building was leaking and they are fixing it. There are no plans for a new business to move it at the moment. Nothing has been agreed in terms of rent for the building. The owner is currently in China and we are just looking after it for him.”
The work on the vacant building is believed to surround the chimney, which will be fully demolished and rebuilt, and the work is expected to be completed within the next week or two.
