There are calls for more external experts to take part in an investigation into the death of a young mother at the National Maternity Hospital.

Doctors from the hospital on Dublin’s Holles Street will try to work out what led to the death of Malak Thawley last month.

34-year-old Malak died during surgery for an ectopic pregnancy.

Her husband, Alan Thawley, is represented by the solicitor Caoimhe Haughey and she has said doctors should not investigate a death at their own hospital.

“I just would like to say that I’m not entirely satisfied with the make-up of the inquiry team, predominantly made up of medical doctors from Holles Street Hospital – bar one external member,” said Haughey.

“For true transparency, impartiality and independence I don’t really agree with organisations investigating themselves when things go wrong.”
