The Jumbo Breakfast Roll team will be flying the flag for Wexford in this weekend’s Red Bull Soap Box race in Cork

A GROUP of friends from the Newbawn and Gusserane areas of County Wexford will be competing in this weekend’s Red Bull Soapbox race in Cork.

The international event will have teams from all over the country participating and the local lads are confident their Jumbo Breakfast Roll soapbox will do well.

The team is composed of Nigel Molloy, Myles Stamp (both from Gusserane), Mark Culleton (Campile), Dwayne Dunne (New Ross) and James Stafford (Clonmines)

The friends know each other through a collective interest in motor sport and also through Mr. Molloy’s auto factor business in Newbawn.

Speaking to the Echo about the competition this week Mr. Molloy said the idea to create a soap box based around a breakfast roll came from James Stafford.

“I think it was James who came up with the idea initially,” he said.

“When the advert first came up we decided we would do it,” he added.

With regard to the application process he said after the initial submission their entry was accepted.
“You have to try and be different and we thought well being Irish and all a breakfast roll would be great and it got picked,” said Mr. Molloy.

The soap box had to be manufactured completely from scratch and many evenings were spent in Mr. Molloy’s shed as the team set about creating their mobile calorie machine.

The race itself will take place between 12 noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, however the local crew will travel to Cork the day beforehand.

The team got a great response when they visited Gusserane National School on Thursday morning.

Mr. Molloy is hoping that history will repeat itself as the last time the event was held in Cork it was another team from the Newbawn area that came back with the title!

Members of the public can vote for the Jumbo Breakfast Roll team by logging onto www.redbullsoapboxrace.com however voting ends at midnight tonight!
