The body of a young man has been recovered from the sea in Co Clare.

The alarm was raised at around 8.15am today when emergency services received a report of a body in the water close to the beach in Kilkee.

The local unit of the Irish Coast Guard was alerted and along with gardaĆ­, responded to the scene.

Shortly before 9am, personnel from Kilkee Coast Guard located the body understood to be a 22-year-old male from north Cork.

The body was recovered from the water and taken to the Coast Guard station where a doctor had been asked to attend.

The remains have since been taken to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination and formal identification will take place.

GardaĆ­ are investigating the discovery. It is understood the man may have fallen into the water during the night.
