The 25th Seanad will meet for the first time today.

However, after electing a Cathaoirleach, the ‘Upper House’ of the Oireachtas will adjourn again for a week.

It has already cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of euro in wages and expenses before holding a single sitting.

The 25th Seanad will finally meet today with the only item on the agenda being the election of a Cathaoirleach.

Fianna Fáil’s Denis O’Donovan is to secure that post after a deal was cut with Fine Gael, though Sinn Féin will also put forward a nominee.

All eyes will be on Taoiseach Enda Kenny as to who he selects to be Fine Gael leader in the upper house as he is expected to give the nod to his deputy leader and former Minister, James Reilly.
