SSE Airtricity League First Division club Athlone Town have been hit with a number of sanctions by the FAI’s disciplinary committee after failing to fulfil their fixture with Waterford United last week.

Some Athlone players refused to board the team bus to Waterford for the fixture at the RSC on June 3 after a row with the club over the unpaid expenses and this lead to the postponement of the fixture.

After an independent review into the incident, the FAI’s disciplinary committee have tonight announced a raft of punishments for Athlone.

Firstly, Waterford United have been awarded a 3-0 victory over Athlone – as they have been deemed to have forfeited the fixture.

The club have also been handed a €1,000 fine, with an additional €4,000 suspended. That €4,000 will be payable should Athlone Town fail to fulfil another fixture this season.

Athlone will also lose their home fixture with Waterford on August 5, with the game now scheduled to be played at Waterford’s RSC ground on that date instead.

Finally, in a further blow, the disciplinary committee have also ruled that Waterford United will receive all the gate receipts from that fixture.
