Calls for a review of vulture funds and commuter transport will be made at a property and housing conference in Dublin today.

The Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers’ conference is to address the shortfall in available homes.

It is aiming to outline possible affordable long term solutions to the current crisis.

Housing lecturer at DIT Dr Lorcan Sirr has said the problem is getting worse and not better.

“We have an increasing number of people in the private rental section, more than 20% of all households and that’s going to increase – it’s not going to get smaller that number,” said Sirr.

“We have 170 houses a week fall into obsolesce and also we are going to have to face the fact that a lot of people are going to need housing support forever, in some way, shape or form.”
