Sebastian Vettel finished fastest in final practice for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix in a session which ended prematurely after Kevin Magnussen dramatically crashed into the wall.

Vettel set a best lap of one minute and 13.919 seconds in the cool conditions at Montreal’s Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit to finish ahead of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg.

With world champion Lewis Hamilton, who was fastest in both practice sessions on Friday, only fifth quickest, a tantalising shoot-out for pole appears set to follow later on Saturday.

The sunny conditions which bathed Montreal on Friday had been replaced by cloud cover for final practice, and spots of rain also began to fall midway through the one-hour session.

A number of drivers were caught out in the testing conditions – including Hamilton, who called on his team to inspect the floor of his Mercedes after he ran over the kerbing at the final chicane.

But there would be no more dramatic incidents than that of Magnussen, whose participation in qualifying will now be in doubt after his crash.

The former McLaren driver lost control of his Renault on the exit of turn seven, and thudded into the concrete wall. The heavy impact tore both wheels of the left-hand side of his car with carbon fibre littering the track.

The session was suspended, and then abandoned, and Magnussen’s Renault mechanics will face a race against time to get his car in a fit shape for qualifying.

Elsewhere, Daniel Ricciardo was sixth fastest in his Red Bull with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso eighth in the order. Jenson Button finished 13th, while British rookie Jolyon Palmer ended the session in 16th place.
