Irish athletes competing at this year’s Olympics are being advised to return home as soon as their involvement comes to an end amid fears about the Zika virus.

The condition is linked to birth defects amongst babies and has been spreading across the South America, including Brazil where the Olympics will be held.

The Sunday Times reports the team’s medical adviser has said the risk of catching it may increase after athletes finish competing, as they will be more relaxed and may let their guard down on preventative measures.

Anyone travelling to region is also being warned not to have unprotected sex for at least six months after returning, as the virus may be sexual transmitted.
