An England fan in a coma with severe brain injuries after being attacked by Russia supporters during the Euro 2016 football tournament in France has been named as Andrew Bache.

Portsmouth supporter Mr Bache, known as Pepe, is in a critical condition in a French hospital after being assaulted by Russians armed with iron bars ahead of England’s match against Russia in Marseille.

Friends of Mr Bache in Portsmouth, Hampshire, have launched a fundraising campaign on social media and his local pub is holding an event on Saturday night. They have raised nearly half of the £10,000 target.

His brother posted on Facebook: “I have just had a call from the British Embassy and they say the hospital had informed them that Pepe’s injuries are no longer life-threatening but could be life-changing.

“He is still in a serious condition and they won’t know the extent of his injuries until he is taken out of the induced coma.

“I was told that the chief inspector of the local police has informed them that they have excellent CCTV footage of the attack and have identified those involved and pictures have been forwarded to French police.”
