The Republic of Ireland had Shane Long leading the line as they got their Euro 2016 campaign under way against Sweden.
Here, Press Association Sport assesses how the striker fared in the 1-1 draw at the Stade de France.
GOAL THREAT
Ultimately, Long was unable to provide this. He worked hard but struggled to get into the game a lot of the time and there was only one real occasion when he might have scored, the Southampton man failing to make contact as he dived to try to meet a delivery in front of goal just before half-time.
Long protested he had been fouled by his marker as the ball came into the box, but Serbian referee Milorad Mazic was not interested.
LINK-UP PLAY
The 29-year-old’s best moment overall came when he produced a neat touch around the half-hour mark to tee up Jeff Hendrick, who drilled a shot against the crossbar and was the Republic’s most dangerous-looking player over the course of the contest.
OVERALL
Not a bad performance from Long but certainly a quiet one for him. He may well be left regretting not having been able to make a greater impact considering how the Republic were unable to hold onto their lead.
