Security has been stepped up at the Republic of Ireland’s training base in Versailles in the wake of the double murder of two police officials.

There was a noticeably more prominent police presence at the Stade de Montbauron on Wednesday morning as a result of the stabbing to death of a police commander and his wife at Magnanville – around a 30-mile drive from Versailles – to the west of Paris on Monday evening.

The incident happened shortly after the Republic’s 1-1 draw with Sweden in their opening Euro 2016 fixture at the Stade de France.

Security was already tight around the tournament with armed guards patrolling the team hotel and travelling on the coach with the players.

However, assistant manager Roy Keane insisted at the weekend that their presence was far from obtrusive and had had little impact on the staff or the squad.

Ireland were due to train at 11am on Wednesday as they continued preparations for Saturday afternoon’s Group E clash with Belgium in Bordeaux.

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Ireland has appealed to supporters for help in finding a fan who has gone missing in Paris.

Lee McGlaughlin, 19, from Inishowen, County Donegal, was due to fly home on Tuesday, but has not been seen since leaving his hotel earlier that day.
