There were almost 500 new cases of HIV in 2015, an increase of 30% on the previous year.

The Union of Students in Ireland has teamed up with Operation Zero on Irish AIDS Day to reduce the stigma surrounding the virus.

They have launched a campaign to encourage people to get tested with the message “no shame, no judgment, just support”.

HIV Advocate Robbie Lawlor, says there should be no excuses not to get checked.

He said: “We live in a society where you can just go and get tested, you shouldn’t have shame or stigma attached to getting tested, because we all have sex.

“It’s looking after yourself and not only that but it’s looking after the other people, it’s a self responsibility.”

“USI is encouraging students across Ireland to regularly get tested.” Kevin Donoghue, USI President said.

“STI screenings are available in health clinics across campuses and from local GPs. There are also free rapid HIV testing in locations such as Panti Bar in Dublin; GOSHH in Limerick, Chambers nightclub in Cork and a walk-in clinic in UCH Galway.

“STI screenings only take five minutes and are essential for a healthy sex life.”
