Expectant mothers are being warned of the risks posed by being overweight.

The Master of National Maternity Hospital has issued the warning saying maternity services are facing a crisis due to the increase of pregnant women who are above the recommended weight.

It is reported the women have all the associated complications including miscarriage, congenital malformation and gestational diabetes.

The Irish Independent reports that almost 40% of the women who attend the facility at Holles Street are over the age of 35, which also increases the risk of complications during pregnancy.
