The FAI have highlighted the role of League of Ireland players in the national squad, writes Stephen Barry.

Ireland’s goal against Sweden on Monday was created by former Sligo Rovers stalwart Seamus Coleman and finished by Shelbourne centurion Wes Hoolahan.

Ireland striker Shane Long also enjoyed a brief stint at Cork City, while James McClean, who played for four years at Derry City, come on for the final half-hour against Sweden.

That quartet, along with Stephen Ward (Bohemians), David Meyler (Cork City), Daryl Murphy (Waterford United) and Stephen Quinn (St Patrick’s Athletic), were brought together for a photo in their old kits today.

It would’ve been more only for David Forde (Galway United and Derry City) and Kevin Doyle (St Pat’s and Cork City) to be among the last few cut from Martin O’Neill’s extended squad.

Although we were hoping that Roy Keane would don his old Cobh Ramblers kit too for the photo.

C’mon, Roy! For old times’ sake.
