The Government is threatening bin companies with fresh regulations to control charges.
It is after private companies hiked up annual standing charges in the wake of new pay-by-weight legislation being introduced.
The Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald has told the Dáil that the intention was to reduce waste charges for families, not for them to increase.
Frances Fitzgerald said Minister Simon Coveney would meet the waste collection companies next week, and if necessary would introduce new legislation to stop increasing charges.
She said: “If the opportunity is being seen to try and take advantage in any way, the Minister will introduce regulations if necessary.
“But in the first instance he is meeting with the companies, next week and is dealing with this as an urgent issue, because we accept that it is an urgent issue.”
