More than three quarters of people believe crime is a serious problem in Ireland, according to a new survey.

The Garda Public Attitudes survey of 6,000 people shows crime is seen as a serious problem nationally, but less believe it is an issue in their local area.

The survey took place in 2015 and revealed that more than one in 10 people have been the victim of crime in the last year.

Key crimes experiences were burglary, criminal damage, assaults, theft of bikes and other thefts.

As well as this it was discovered victims of crime are more likely to see crime as a serious issue locally compared to non-victims.

The survey shows that 85% have confidence in the Gardaí to do their job.

It also suggests that people want to see the force focus more on crimes against the person like sexual assaults and human trafficking.

Low priority crimes were seen to be Public Order offences, Traffic Offences and Criminal Damage.
