Minister Simon Coveney has met with representatives from waste management companies about plans to increase bin charges under a new pay-by-weight model.
The Minister for Housing and Local Government described the meeting – with senior representatives from eight companies – as “frank and productive.”
Minister Coveney said he would bring forward a proposal on the issue early next week, prior to the debates in the Oireachtas.
The Dáil is due to debate an Anti-Austerity Alliance-People Before Profit Private Members Motion on Thursday, which calls for an immediate Ministerial order to stop waste companies from introducing planned increases in household waste charges.
The AAA-PBP group has said bin charges are set to rise by between 100-200%, which the alliance says will lead to an increase in illegal dumping around the country.
