Anti-Austerity Alliance are calling on Minister Simon Coveney to freeze bin charges immediately.

New pay by weight charges are due to kick in on Friday, July 1, and some companies have told customers they will be increasing prices significantly as a result.

Minister for Housing Simon Coveney is said to be considering capping charges temporarily as an emergency measure.

AAA TD Paul Murphy says the increases are the beginning of privatisation.

Mr Murphy said: “He’s obviously the man who has responsibility for bin charges and people have experienced a doubling or terebling of their charges in the past month or so.

“We are saying to Simon Coveney that he has to change the regulations to freeze the prices immediately.

“This is the fruits of privatisation, and that profit and privatisation should be reversed.”
