Wales 1 Northern Ireland 0

Northern Ireland are out of Euro 2016 after a heart-breaking own goal sent Wales through to the last eight.

The two sides met this afternoon in their Euro 2016 round of 16 match in Paris.

A Gareth McAuley own goal sealed it for Wales – he turned Gareth Bale’s delicious cross past his own goalkeeper with 15 minutes remaining at the Parc des Princes to end the run of a Northern Irish team competing at their first ever European Championship finals.

Chris Coleman’s men, who had a first-half Aaron Ramsey goal correctly ruled out for offside, are also at their maiden Euros and will now face either Hungary or Belgium in a Lille quarter-final next Friday.

It is 58 years since Wales’ last major tournament. What sounded like a brass band struck up in the red corner of the Parc des Princes in Paris; then the refrain: “Don’t take me home…I just don’t want to go to work.”
