Paris is to confer a medal of honour on the Irish soccer fans that turned the city into a sea of green and viral video hits over the course of Euro 2016.

According to the French sports newspaper L’Équipe, Mayor Anne Hidalgo has written to President Michael D Higgins to inform him of her intention to make the award – officially the Medal of the City of Paris, or ‘Grand Vermeil’.

She said the supporters have been “exemplary in their sportsmanship” and said they had created an extraordinary “atmosphere” from the start of Euro 2016.

The Grand Vermeil has previously been awarded to political and cultural heavyweights. It is not known when the presentation will take place or – our first question – who they actually give it to.

All that tyre-changing, standing up/sitting down and serenading pays off, see?
