An attempt by Labour to stop schools using religious beliefs alone as a grounds for admission has been defeated in the Dáil.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil united to impose a one year delay before voting on the proposed legislation.

The Government has said it will use that time to publish its own legislation – and to have the details teased out by the Education committee.
