The Independent TD Mick Wallace has accused the Government of “kicking the can down the road” in terms of the abortion issue by referring the matter to a citizens convention.

Last night the Dáil debated his bill to allow terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities.

The Cabinet has yet to decide how it will vote on the proposed legislation.

However, a government Minister has said the Attorney General believes the bill to be unconstitutional.

Mick Wallace disagrees and is urging the Government to publish its legal advice.

“I think it’s another case of kicking the can down the road,” said Wallace.

“I think it will take at least a year and a half to before it would deliver and I don’t think it’s good enough. I think it should be allowed to go to the Supreme Court now and be tested.”
