A Fianna Fáil Senator has today called for tougher measures to deal with gun crime.
Local Senator Catherine Ardagh’s comments come in the wake of latest fatal shooting in Dublin city.
David Douglas was shot dead outside a shop on Bridgefoot Street just after 4pm yesterday afternoon.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have seen a silver/grey Mercedes Benz in the area to contact them.
Senator Ardagh said that gun crime needs to be treated more seriously in Irish courts.
“I think what we need to do is bring in tougher legislation in terms of minimum mandatory sentences for people who are in possession of firearms,” she said.
“Because until people think that there’s actually something going to happen to you for carrying around guns, I don’t think it’s going to stop.
“It’s very upsetting for people living in the area that they think they can’t walk around during the day, or they might get caught in the crossfire.”
