Social Democrat TD Catherine Murphy is calling for a radical redistribution of gardaĆ around the country.
Deputy Murphy said an imbalance in garda resources was leaving some rural areas dangerously exposed to criminality and an under-reporting of crime statistics.
Her comments follow a Newstalk Breakfast investigation into where and how GardaĆ are stationed around the country.
She said her county of Kildare is the only one without a community garda.
“You lose visibility and the prospect of a more proactive kind of policing,” she said. “It’s all reactive to the kind of crimes that are reported, rather than preventing crime.”
