Italy fans are in no doubt that their side’s exit from the Euro 2016 tournament was as devastating for Gianluigi Buffon as it was for them.
The goalkeeper and team captain was in tears after his side bowed out at the quarter-final stage, losing to Germany in a penalty shootout on Saturday night.

And when the team left their hotel the following day Buffon made a beeline for fans waiting outside. Rather than simply wave or sign autographs the beloved keeper hugged the Italian supporters.
